Yellow: A Color Exhibition

The Garfield Park Arts Center presents its 2nd annual Color Exhibition, featuring the color yellow. Yellow, the color of sunshine, often represents warmth, happiness, optimism, energy, and intelligence. However, it can also signify caution or fragility. View artwork created by local artists containing various shades, tones, and meanings of yellow and see how the color has moved them.

The show goes live on June 5, 2020 and runs until the 27th on the Garfield Park Arts Center Website. Click here to visit their website.

A Virtual First Friday is happening on Instagram June 5 from 6-8 PM. Follow @gpacindyparks to see my work and the other talented artists!

Primary: MTA XXII 2020

1st Primary V2 ~ 2020

Here are the finished pieces from Meet The Artists 2020. It was really great blessing to be a part of this show. To have the opportunity to be seen in this light is incredible and more than I could ask for. I hope to continue working at this level.

Special thank you to Billy and Claudia Thomas for my framing. Really everything about this was wonderful.

Thanks to the Indianapolis Public Library and the Center for Black Literature and Culture. Thank you to everyone involved.

Gaze

Aw, made you look. You a slave to a page…(snort)

gaze/ɡāz/ verb: gaze
1. look steadily and intently, especially in admiration, surprise, or thought.”he could only gaze at her in astonishment”
2. (in literary theory) a particular perspective taken to embody certain aspects of the relationship between observer and observed, especially as reflected in the way in which an author or film director (unconsciously or otherwise) directs attention.”the male gaze”

Have you ever cropped an image? How did you choose what to show? How did you want that image interpreted? These are questions I come back to repeatedly as an artist and designer. They say a picture is worth 1000 words, but we live in a world saturated by images. In an environment that is so saturated how do you hold people’s attention?

You loose control of an image the moment you give to an audience. Once its in the public gaze, they have no choice but to apply their own perspectives and interpretations. That’s true of art, design and selfies.

Does that truth grind my gears? Yes. Can I do anything about it? Sort of… My best solution is to control as much of your image as possible. I want to be known as an artist. So I choose to show art. And engage with art. Turn my pain into art. Turn my joy into art. Life imitates art.

Did you know Medusa translates to queen? Here’s a great link.

“…get stiff, they call me Medusa
I don’t wanna fuck without the Medula…” – Megan Thee Stallion

“VERSACE VERSACE VERSACE” – The Migos

“Get some get some get some crazy shit for me
I want, I want, you know, leopard-skin, and you know?
I want, I want all that crazy lizard-skin shit, like, you know?” – Nicki Minaj

I’m just saying I laughed.

Roses

Did you hear…
Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?
Provin’ nature’s laws wrong
It learned to walk without having feet
Funny it seems but by keeping its dreams
It learned to breathe FRESH air
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
When no one else, even cared

[Verse 3: Spoken Word]

I have never been much for flowers. I’ve always been more of a “blood of my enemies in a crystal goblet” type of chick. It wasn’t until I became a mother and a wife that I learned to see them as more than just pretty ornamentation. Flowers are plants. They have tenacity.

First version from my sketchbook… I kept at it.

te·nac·i·ty /təˈnasədē/noun

  1. the quality or fact of being able to grip something firmly; grip.”the sheer tenacity of the limpet”
    • the quality or fact of being very determined; determination.”you have to admire the tenacity of these two guys”
    • the quality or fact of continuing to exist; persistence.”the tenacity of certain myths within the historical record”

Flowers and plants evolved on this planet first and they will be here last. They provide food, shelter and comfort to everything above it in the food chain. They provide oxygen which is #essential. (Have you ever tried not breathing? Exactly.)

I still don’t really want to receive a bouquet for Mother’s Day but I am learning to appreciate my flowers while I can. I prefer to see them in their natural habitat, wild and growing undisturbed. But I can also see the beauty in a well tended and highly manicured garden.

And listen you don’t have to be a rose. You can be a redwood, sunflower, a lily, cannabis. That’s dope too (I’m sorry). Shit, there’s a cactus on my work desk ( it’s prickly like me).

I hope you spend some time tending your garden. Try to appreciate your flowers for what they are. Purposeful, thorny, beautiful.

Awe fuck…this song gets me every time.
My grandma used to listen to a version of this song by Rev. James Cleveland. Miss her.

Starting Again…Again

I’m had a visual epiphany of sorts and now I’m about to restart this piece. We are going all the way back to white canvas, which is fine I guess. Im sort of an expert at starting things over, both personally and professionally.

I definitely pushed this piece too far, too fast mostly because I felt pressed for time. That’s never the move. My work requires time; which is even more frustrating cause I’m an “essential” worker and I’m constantly bombarded by reminders that I am unable to have that time for my artwork. It feels like I’m falling behind.

I’m not religious but I understand that God happens in its own time. That is very comforting for some people…All I can do is keep working and see what happens.

Somewhere in here, There’s room for a quote…(10,000 hours to mastery blah words words)…I’m gonna save that energy for actual painting.

The Outpouring

20×20” Acrylic & Mixed Media. Approx. 24 Hand Hours

THE ALL, in its aspect of Being, projects its Will toward its aspect of “Becoming” and the process of creation begins… This process is believed … to have a Correspondence to the metal process of an artist, writer, or inventor…This Involuntary stage of Creation is sometimes called the “Outpouring” of the Divine Energy, just as the Evolutionary state is called the “Indrawing”

From The Kybalion, Chapter 7: Paragraph 9 & 10, Paraphrased

Have you ever had something move through you? Making this piece was really a moment of peak flow. With everything happening on the planet, it is really wonderful to experience such a focused and purposeful head space.

This piece was completed in approximately 24 working hours over 4 days. Typically a project like this would take me a few weeks at least. A smidge of that is practical considerations (ugh work 😐) but it is partially due to the material and research processes that are used to create the work.

My work has always consisted of layers. Both layers of art materials (layers of paint or marker and pencil, digital layers) and layers of ideas. As I progress these things only become more integrated. Recently, this year especially, I have been finding it more and more necessary to find a unity between my marker and pencil work and my abstract pieces. This interconnection reaches into the ideas and philosophy behind each piece as well. One of the ways that I try to extend my art to others is by combining ideas from various philosophical, scientific and religious traditions. From my perspective truth isn’t differentiation. The truth of our experience is in commonality. In order to present a truly holistic narrative, my artwork must also become more interconnected.
