Making Martindale is a cultural preservation project, led by Cierra Johnson in partnership with the Harrison Center with support from INRC. As an historically Black area, Martindale and more recently Brightwood have played an integral role in the development of Indianapolis’ culture and history. Those stories deserve to be told to and by artists of color, rooted in a strong tradition of oral history. The Making Martindale project pairs artists & makers with long term residents to collect stories about the neighborhood and keep culture alive through peer to peer interviews.Â
